Ye is a 15 year old boy from Burma who was diagnosed with a malformed heart valve (mitral valve), and as a result he has a condition called mitral regurgitation, where a portion of the blood in his heart flows backwards into his lungs instead of forward to the rest of his body.

Mitral regurgitation is a serious condition that needs to be fixed surgically. As it worsens, more and more blood will be ejected backwards into the lungs with each heart beat. This makes it very difficult to breath, it also causes problems for the rest of your body as there is decreased forward flow of blood to your brain and other vital organs.

We partner with Watsi, which is essentially a kickstarter for people’s medical care. With each mug or coffee purchase, a portion of the revenue will go directly to fund a person’s healthcare. We use apothecary styled labeling and design, and each bag tells one of medicine’s greatest discoveries. Our first blend is called ‘Norepi,’ a shorthand name of norepinephrine, which is one of the hormones your adrenal gland secretes. Our Norepi blend tells the story of Dr Oliver, one of the first physicians who discovered that our adrenal glands secreted these strange hormones. People who have a condition known as a Pheochromocytoma (‘pheo’ for short), can secrete too much of this norepinephrine causing them to have symptoms that can mimic what you may experience after having a few cups of coffee - tremor, fast heart rate, etc. We currently have one coffee, a single origin Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. It is somewhat tea-like, with fruity aromas and tasting notes that we think is special enough to be our first offering. ​

Our second medical care funding campaign was Kisembo. He is a 5 year old from Uganda that needed a hernia repair surgery. Fortunately his campaign on Watsi was recently fully funded!

Kisembo is a 5 year old from Uganda who was having severe abdominal pain that was keeping from doing the things he loves to do. It got so bad that he couldn't sleep.

​He went to the doctor and was found to have an epigastric hernia, which is an outpouching of fat or intestines through the abdominal wall.

His surgery costs $219. Pheo coffee purchases have funded a portion. To contribute to Kisembo's surgery, buy some coffee or go to his campaign directly.

Shopping at the local supermarket for coffee can be like shopping for month old bananas, except you can't see the freshness disappear visually. Most of the beans sold on the store shelves were roasted weeks to months ago.

That's why we believe roasting for each order is so important. If you purchase our coffee, it will arrive at your door 2-3 days after it was roasted, and we put a roast on date on the bottom of each bag.
